Council permits in the Inner West

The Inner West is served by Inner West Council, formed in 2016 from the former Ashfield, Leichhardt and Marrickville councils. You only need a permit when the skip bin is placed on public land — Council states it is an offence to stand a bin on any footpath or carriageway without approval, so a Skip Bin User Permit is required for road placement (a bin on your own driveway or property usually needs none). Where public placement is required, Local Skip Bin Hire arranges the permit for you and the council fee is added to your booking.

Council references are a guide only and were reviewed on 19 July 2026 against Inner West Council's own website — always confirm current requirements with your council. See the national council permit guide.

Council permit and fee in Inner West

Inner West Council requires a permit to place a skip bin on the road, footpath or nature strip in Inner West. A bin kept entirely on your own private property does not need one.

What Inner West Council publishes: Free for the initial period if the bin is hired from a Council-approved provider: 7 days in a non-metered parking area (max 2 free permits per calendar year) or 3 days in a metered parking area (max 1 per calendar year). Beyond that the additional period costs $148.00/week in a non-metered area (up to 12 weeks) or $71.70/day in a metered area (up to 7 days).

  • Processing time: permit emailed within two business days (extensions must be applied for at least two business days before the free period ends).
  • How long the bin can stay: Free period of 7 days (non-metered) or 3 days (metered), extendable by a paid additional period of up to 12 weeks (non-metered) or 7 days (metered).
  • What it is called: skip bin user permit.
  • Permits: 02 9392 5000

What Inner West Council asks for:

  • Standing a bin on the footpath or carriageway without approval is an offence.
  • A three metre wide passageway must be kept clear for traffic to pass the bin, which may rule out some locations entirely.
  • Only one bin may occupy the road reserve at a frontage at a time, and swapping a bin does not extend the permit.
