Sunshine Coast is excluded this month — too few catalogue postcodes carried prices to average fairly (coverage under review).

How we calculate the index

Source: our own published marketplace catalogue on 2026-08-27 — real advertised prices from vetted suppliers, not survey estimates or list prices.

Method: for each postcode we take the lowest advertised price for each skip size (general waste), then average those from-prices across all serviced postcodes in a city's metro postcode band. Sizes below 2m³, Load & Go rubbish-removal services, and hook-lift bins (13m³+) are excluded so like is compared with like; a city/size cell is shown only where enough postcodes carry that size.

Metro postcode bands: Sydney 2000–2234/2555–2574/2745–2770 · Newcastle 2280–2310 · Wollongong 2500–2530 · Canberra 2600–2620/2900–2920 · Melbourne 3000–3211 (+ outer growth bands) · Brisbane 4000–4207/4300–4305/4500–4520 · Gold Coast 4209–4287 · Sunshine Coast 4550–4575 · Adelaide 5000–5174 · Perth 6000–6199.

The published metro row counts vary by metro and are shown in the table. Sample size varies by city (shown in the table); smaller markets move more between editions. Indicative only — your price depends on your exact postcode, waste type and dates. Read the full method — how these prices are collected, what is counted and when they were checked.

Skip bin price FAQ

How much does a skip bin cost in Australia?

Based on the 27 August 2026 published marketplace catalogue snapshot across nine published metro areas in the 27 August 2026 catalogue snapshot in September 2026, the average from-price is about $305 for a 2m³ skip, $534 for a 4m³ skip, $694 for a 6m³ skip and $1,111 for a 10m³ skip. These are indicative catalogue averages, not exact quotes or a survey of every Australian supplier.

Which city has the cheapest skip bins?

For a 2m³ mini skip, Wollongong is cheapest on average ($245) and Gold Coast the dearest ($372). The cheapest city changes by size — the tables above show the average for every city and size.

How is the price index calculated?

For each postcode we take the lowest advertised price for each skip size (general waste), then average those from-prices across every serviced postcode in a city's metro postcode band. It uses our own published marketplace catalogue — not survey estimates.

How often is the index updated?

Monthly. Each edition is dated and rebuilt from the current published catalogue, so the figures track real market movement rather than a one-off snapshot.

Why do skip bin prices vary so much between cities?

Tip and landfill levies, travel distance to depots, permit rules and local competition all differ by council and state, so the same size skip can cost noticeably more in one metro than another.
