Cumberland council clean-up vs skip bin: the real numbers

Should you book the free Cumberland council clean-up, or hire a skip bin? On-call booking, but capped at 2 cubic metres a time. Fine for a few pieces of furniture; a bin from about 2 cubic metres up, for building waste, or when you cannot wait. A skip bin in 2141 starts at $308 (network price read 30 August 2026). Both sides of that comparison are below, with sources and dates.

Cumberland is one of the few councils that publishes a yearly total as well as a per-booking cap: 2 cubic metres a time, 8 cubic metres per property per year. The stacking rule is the memorable part: no higher or wider than two motorbikes parked together.

What the free Cumberland council clean-up actually gives you

Yes. 4 free clean-ups per calendar year. 2 cubic metres per booking, 8 cubic metres per property per year in total. Stack no higher or wider than two motorbikes parked together.

Past that, Council charges $108.00 for 2 cubic metres.

How to book: cumberland.nsw.gov.au/bookacleanup or 02 8757 9000. Available to houses, attached dwellings, flats, units and apartments; not to commercial properties.

How long is the wait for a council clean-up in Cumberland?

Minimum 2 weeks' notice required.

What the free service will not take

Building materials and construction waste, hazardous items, large glass sheets, asbestos, vehicle parts, fence material, and anything too heavy for two people

In practice that is the renovation clause. If the pile came out of a bathroom strip-out, a deck demolition or a landscaping job, the free service is not the answer — the excluded materials are exactly what those jobs produce.

When waiting for the free collection is the right answer

If everything in the pile is ordinary household material — furniture, whitegoods, the garage clear-out — and it genuinely fits 2 cubic metres per booking once stacked on the kerb, book the free collection and keep your money. We arrange skip bins for a living and will still tell you that: nothing we can deliver beats free. The two questions to answer honestly first: will it really fit the cap, and can the job wait at least 2 weeks?

When a skip bin is the better call

A bin wins on any of three counts: the pile contains building or renovation waste the free service refuses, the volume is over the cap, or the date cannot wait for the council queue. It sits on your property while you load it, and everything leaves in one lift.
