Skip Bin Permit Canterbury-Bankstown Council
If your skip is going on a road, footpath, nature strip or parking bay in the Canterbury-Bankstown Council area, that is council land and the rules below apply. On your own driveway or property, they generally do not. The Waste in Public Places Local Approvals Policy 'does not apply to waste on private property. Waste on private property is guided by the provisions of the NSW State Environmental Planning Policy (Exempt and Complying Development Codes) 2008, Local Orders Policy and the Canterbury-Bankstown Local Environment Plan 2023.' The policy also states skip bins 'may only be placed on roads or roads related areas when there is insufficient space on the property from which waste is to be disposed, or access to and from the property would be adversely affected', and that 'Where possible, and with the explicit consent of the property owner, skip bin suppliers should place these bins on private property.'

Conditions the council sets
- 'Irrespective of the colour of the Skip Bin, retro-reflective tape must be used. This tape is to be applied around the entirety of the rim on all bins and is to have a minimum width of 50mm'
- 'Flashing yellow lights should be mounted on Skip Bins when placed within the road reserve or bicycle pathways at locations that are poorly lit... mounted on the front and rear panels... and are to operate during hours of darkness'
- 'The placement of Skip Bins is not permitted on sections of roads and road related areas where signposted kerbside timed parking restrictions apply', and bins cannot be placed where vehicles are prohibited from parking or stopping under the Road Rules 2014 (NSW)
- Skip bins must not be placed at locations that obstruct access to utility services or other devices that may require 24-hour servicing, 'for example, traffic signal boxes, fire hydrants and telecommunications poles'
- Skip bins placed in public places must not exceed length 4.0 metres, width 2.0 metres, volume capacity 20 cubic metres, weight capacity 10 tonnes; bins exceeding these criteria require a separate activity application
