What size skip bin do I need for a 3 bedroom house?
The direct answer
A 6m³ skip bin clears a three-bedroom house of accumulated clutter. You need 8m³ or more only if you are emptying the house completely — furniture, whitegoods, carpet and shed included.
The distinction matters and almost nobody makes it. "Decluttering" a house and "emptying" a house are different volumes by a factor of about two.
- Decluttering — cupboards, wardrobes, the spare room, the garage shelves, the things you have been meaning to deal with. A three-bedroom house: 6m³.
- Emptying — everything goes, including the furniture you are sitting on, the beds, the carpet and the contents of the shed. 8m³ to 10m³, or a 6m³ twice across two weekends.
A 6m³ holds roughly the equivalent of 25 standard 240-litre wheelie bins.
What the market says, and why it disagrees
Australian size guides recommend anywhere from 6m³ to 10m³ for the same three-bedroom house. One operator describes 6m³ as "the most common size" for a three-to-four bedroom declutter — asserted without any sample behind it.
We can say something narrower and check it: of the 338 paid orders in the 65 days to 30 August 2026, 313 named a size — and of those 313, only 11.2% (35 orders) were 8m³ or larger, while 87.5% were 2–6m³. Measured against all 338 paid orders, including the 25 that name no size, the 8m³-or-larger share is 10.4%. Most Australian households, whatever the job, are not booking the big bins. Our records name the size booked, not the job it was for — so treat the size recommendation above as our operational judgement and the 11.2% as the fact.

This is not the same measurement as our skip bin price index. That page reports our published price list — a mean of the lowest advertised catalogue price for each size across 826 metropolitan postcodes — where the national 4m³ reads $534 (source dataset catalogue-stats.json, generated 27 August 2026; index read 31 August 2026). Those are list averages, not quotes. The figures above are medians of live supplier-network quotes across 305 postcodes, metro and regional, captured 30 August 2026, where the 4m³ median is $446 over n = 275. Mean against median, published list price against live quote, 826 metro postcodes against 305 mixed: the gap is method and population, not a price change, and neither figure supersedes the other. The index says as much itself: "A live quote for your own postcode is often lower." If you quote one, say which one.

6m³ to 8m³ costs a median $211 (n = 208 postcodes priced at both sizes). Two 3m³ bins cost a median $139 more than one 6m³ and are dearer in 76% of the 221 postcodes priced at both; two 4m³ cost a median $117 more than one 8m³ and are dearer in 74% of 221. One bigger bin beats two smaller ones in roughly three-quarters of the postcodes we price.
Two 6m³ bins over two weekends is a legitimate plan
If you are emptying a house and the 10m³ price is uncomfortable, booking a 6m³ twice is a real option — you get the same total volume, a break in between, and you spread the cost. It is dearer than a single 12m³ by a median $65 (n = 223 postcodes priced at both), which for many people is worth it for two calm weekends instead of one frantic one.
We mention it because no size guide does, and because the alternative most people choose — booking too small and then panicking — costs more than either.
Which waste category
General waste or household waste, whichever your area offers. They priced within a median $2 of each other across the 27 postcodes that priced both at 4m³, so there is nothing to gain by choosing between them on price.
Do not book a heavy or soil category for a household clear-out. And keep the garden material separate if there is a lot of it — see the garden clean-up answer.
What is NOT allowed
Never accepted in any skip bin, no exceptions:
- Asbestos, fibro and fibreglass
- Chemicals, liquids, oils, fuels, paints and solvents
- Gas bottles and aerosols
- Batteries
- Clinical or medical waste
A whole-house clear-out is the job most likely to turn these up. The laundry cupboard, the garage shelf, the shed, under the sink. Set them aside before the bin arrives and use your council's chemical and hazardous waste drop-off. If they are found after collection, contamination and disposal fees are charged and the load may be rejected.
Surcharged items, and why there is no figure here. Mattresses and tyres are accepted in most areas and carry a per-item fee. We do not publish a figure for it, and you should distrust any page that does. We hold per-city surcharge data and it does not support a published number: it was measured in a single postcode, this corpus files that one measurement under two different postcodes, every row carries the booking engine's own verified: false flag, and one market declares a unit price of zero for all three items while the quote total still moves. Declare the items when you book and the quote for your postcode will show the fee that applies there.
A three-bedroom house being emptied often has three or four mattresses, so this is worth doing before you book rather than after.
Practical notes
- Take the longest hire that is free. For the same 4m³ bin, 3, 5 and 7 days were the same price in 60% of 60 postcodes tested on 30 August 2026; 10 days cost a median $47 more, 14 days $54. A house clear-out is a fortnight job for most people, and 14 days for $54 is the best-value decision on this page.
- We arrange the bin; you load it. We do not do manual removal, loading, carrying or sorting. Everything that goes in the bin, you put there — plan the help you need before the bin lands.
- Placement. A 6m³ needs real driveway room and clear overhead access for the truck. If it has to go on the street, check whether your council requires a permit.

That file records prices only; it carries no per-quote source flag. Cross-matched against waste-type-prices.json (1,485 quotes captured the same day, every one flagged LIVE_NETWORK), 149 of its 264 values are independently confirmed as live supplier prices, agreeing to the dollar with zero disagreements. The other 115 — 16 postcodes, including all 8 Western Australian, the 1 South Australian and 7 of the 8 Queensland postcodes — cannot be certified either way, and are not presented here as live supplier prices. Every direction reported above survives a cut to the confirmed-live values only; the magnitudes on mixed rubble and light building waste do not, and should be read as approximate.
