The Shire's cap is a workable 3 cubic metres, but the queue is the real story: Council itself says peak-period waits can pass eight weeks. If your job has a date attached, that number decides the whole question.
What the free Sutherland Shire council clean-up actually gives you
Yes. Two pre-booked clean-ups per property each financial year. Three cubic metres (3m x 1m x 1m) per booking, excluding metals and mattresses.
Past that, Council charges $200.00 for 3 cubic metres.

What the free service will not take
Building or demolition materials such as bricks, rubble, tiles, soil, renovation materials and asbestos; car parts and tyres; carpet; sheet glass; gas bottles; heavy loads of wood or metals; business, industrial or commercial waste; items over 1.5m in length
In practice that is the renovation clause. If the pile came out of a bathroom strip-out, a deck demolition or a landscaping job, the free service is not the answer — the excluded materials are exactly what those jobs produce.
When waiting for the free collection is the right answer
If the pile is household goods within three cubic metres (3m x 1m x 1m), excluding metals and mattresses and the job can wait more than eight weeks in peak periods, the free service is the right call — and with a cap this workable, that covers a genuine share of the jobs people price bins for. We arrange skip bins for a living and will still tell you that: nothing we can deliver beats free. What tips it the other way is the pile itself — the exclusion list above — or a deadline the council date cannot meet.
When a skip bin is the better call
A bin wins on any of three counts: the pile contains building or renovation waste the free service refuses, the volume is over the cap, or the date cannot wait for the council queue. It sits on your property while you load it, and everything leaves in one lift.
