Where Kingborough's figures come from, and one date to note
The council's skip bins page states the fee as "50 fee units" and not as a dollar amount. The $98.00 figure comes from converting that against the 2026/27 fees and charges schedule. Because fee units are set by the State Government, this amount moves when the unit value moves — it is not a price Kingborough sets independently.
The Skip Bin / Shipping Container Guidelines PDF is dated March 2020. The placement rules below are taken from it and it remains the council's current published guidance, but it states only that the fee is "in the Fees and Charges Register" rather than naming an amount. The dollar figure is from the 2026/27 register, not from the 2020 guidelines.

The placement rules, and why they matter before you book
Most councils say "do not obstruct the footpath" and leave it there. Kingborough publishes measurements, and they decide whether your street frontage can legally take a bin at all:
- The bin must not be within 10 metres of an intersection, measured from the kerb alignment, and placement is subject to a safety inspection.
- A minimum 1.2 metre clearance must be kept for pedestrian and wheelchair access on a verge or footpath.
- The bin must stay 1.5 metres clear of a driveway crossover and must not be placed in front of or on one.
- The bin must carry at least 150mm square reflective material on its outer edges, and the area must be lit at night.
- Bins cannot go in a No Stopping zone, a No Parking zone, a bus stop, or beside fire hydrants.
On a narrow street near a corner, those numbers can rule out kerbside placement entirely — which is worth establishing before the permit fee is paid, not after.
The penalty, and the State Growth roads
Breaching the conditions can mean the permit is revoked, the bin removed without notice, and a $260 penalty. Nothing may be placed in the road reservation or on other council land until the application is approved, the fee is paid in full and the permit is issued.
One more Kingborough-specific step: if the bin is going on a road managed by the Department of State Growth rather than by the council, that department's approval may also be required. Kingborough arranges it, but it is another party in the chain and another reason to allow the full five working days the council asks for.
