What the City of Launceston does not publish
The 2026/27 fee schedule has no line item that names skip bins. Skip bins are charged under the general "Road, Mall, Parks or Reserve Occupation" item, which is why the amount depends on the bin's footprint in square metres and how long it stays rather than on a fixed price list. We reproduce the mechanism rather than invent a single number for it.
The council publishes no maximum duration for a skip bin permit. Its occupation permit page also notes that typical processing runs 5 to 7 days once the 10 working days notice has been given, which is a guide and not a commitment.
Placement in a metered parking bay attracts additional hooding fees that the council does not quantify on the skip bin page. If your bin is going into a metered bay, ask for that figure before you book.

What the fee actually depends on
Because Launceston charges per square metre per week, two things drive the number: the bin's footprint on the ground and how many days it stays. A larger bin occupies more road, and a longer hire multiplies the weekly rate — but the $173.20 minimum means a very small, very short placement does not get cheaper below that floor, and the $1,000 weekly cap means a very large one stops climbing. Under seven days the occupation fee is pro-rated daily.
Two consequences follow, and both are worth knowing before you book. Sizing down does not necessarily reduce the permit fee, because of the minimum. And splitting one long hire into two short ones is likely to cost more in permits, not less, because each application carries its own minimum.
The condition most Launceston householders do not expect
The council requires the applicant to hold at least $20 million public liability insurance in the applicant's own name. That is a straightforward requirement for a builder and a hard stop for a homeowner applying personally.
