Skip Bin Permit Launceston City Council

Tasmania's second city runs skip bin permits through a general road-and-reserve occupation charge rather than a bin-specific line — the same mechanism covers scaffolding, hoarding and building sheds parked on Council land. Launceston's own Skip Bins and Shipping Containers page points applicants straight to it.

Read from Launceston City Council's Fees and Charges 2026/27 schedule (version dated 25 June 2026, amended 6 August 2026) on 4 September 2026. Check the current page before you book — this is the general occupation rate, not a fee line printed under the word "skip bin."

What the fee actually covers

  • A small skip on a quiet Newnham or Mowbray street will usually sit close to the $173.20 minimum
  • A larger footprint is charged per square metre per week instead — $4.20 outside the CBD, $5.20 inside it — so the fee scales with how much space the bin actually occupies
  • The weekly charge is capped at $1,000 regardless of footprint, and pro-rated daily if the bin is on-site for less than a full week
  • The same permit and fee structure covers shipping containers, scaffolding and hoarding — Council treats a skip bin as one more thing occupying road, park or reserve space

How to apply

Apply online through Council's Occupation of Roads, Parks and Public Reserves Permit process. Council's own guidance: "A Permit must be submitted no less than 10 working days prior to the elected permit period", and processing "will take approximately 5 to 7 days" once lodged. You'll need a Public Liability Insurance certificate, a Traffic Management Plan, photographs and a site map of the proposed placement. Questions go to Council on (03) 6323 3000 (Mon–Fri, 8:30am–5pm) or contactus@launceston.tas.gov.au.

A note on what we can and cannot tell you

We hire skip bins; we don't issue Launceston's road and reserve permits and can't apply for one on your behalf. What's above is what Council had published in its current fee schedule when we checked — Council's own document is the final word if it changes.
