Skip bin vs a tip run — which is actually cheaper?

The direct answer

For a multi-load job, the skip bin usually wins on gate fees alone. For one small, light load in a vehicle you already own, the tip usually wins — and by a lot.

A 4m³ skip bin costs a national median $445 (measured 2 September 2026 across 170 postcodes, delivered, collected and GST included — source). Moving that same volume yourself is about six level 6×4 box-trailer loads (source), and at Melbourne's Whitehorse Recycling and Waste Centre every general-waste trailer visit costs a minimum $125 — six visits is $750 in gate fees alone, before trailer hire, fuel or your weekend. But a single sedan-boot load at Canberra's Mugga Lane is $17.30, and no skip bin on earth beats that.

Most published comparisons of this question assert an answer without a single dollar figure. This page is the arithmetic, with every figure dated and read from the facility's own published fees.

The method — the only honest way to compare

A tip run is not one cost, it is four. Price the whole thing:

trips × (trailer hire if you don't own one + fuel + gate fee for the load) + your time  vs  one skip price, delivered and collected

• Trips — a level 6×4 box trailer carries 0.65m³; the same trailer with a full cage carries 2.16m³. So a 4m³ bin's worth of waste is about six level loads or two caged loads, and a 2m³ bin's worth is three level loads. • Trailer hire — if you don't own one, this is a real line item that varies by suburb and day. We publish no national figure because we hold no verified one; check your local hire yard's own price before you count on the tip run being cheap.
• Fuel — six round trips to your nearest facility. Distance is yours to multiply; it is rarely zero.
• Gate fee — what the facility charges at the weighbridge or per load. Verified figures below.

Facilities price their gates by weight or by load because they weigh what you bring — those per-tonne figures are each facility's own published numbers about their own weighbridge. A skip bin is priced by size and waste type for your postcode, with delivery, collection, tipping and GST in the one number.

Every figure below was read on 2 September 2026 from the council or facility's own published page — the linked source, not an aggregator. Gate fees vary by facility and change each financial year; if your facility is not listed, read its own page before you do the maths.

The worked example — a 4m³ clean-out in Melbourne

The job: a clean-out that fills a 4m³ skip bin. By the trailer conversion this site uses, that is about six level 6×4 box-trailer loads at 0.65m³ each.

The gate fees alone run $305 past the skip before you have hired a trailer, bought fuel or given up the weekend. And this is not a Melbourne quirk: on Brisbane's cheaper schedule, six trailer visits in the 100–500kg band cost 6 × $85.40 = $512.40 — still $67 past the $445 median, on the cheapest verified capital-city ladder.

Could a caged trailer save you? It cuts the trips to two, and if each caged load stays under Whitehorse's 300kg minimum threshold you would pay $125 twice — $250. Whether a full 2.16m³ caged trailer of clean-out waste stays under 300kg depends entirely on what is in it; above that, the same load is charged at $407 a tonne. We publish no volume-to-weight conversion because there is no honest one.

When the tip genuinely wins

Anyone selling skip bins who tells you the tip never wins is not doing the arithmetic. It wins often, and here is exactly when:

• One small, light load in a vehicle you already own. A sedan-boot load at Canberra's Mugga Lane is $17.30. A car load at a Brisbane resource recovery centre is $25.60. A car boot at Whitehorse is $62. No skip bin competes with any of those numbers for a single boot-load of junk.
• Your council gives you free allowances. Brisbane households get 10 free waste vouchers a year, each covering up to 100kg (one voucher also covers up to three mattresses). City of Cockburn residents get six free trailer passes a year with their rates notice. City of Darwin residents dump residential waste free at Shoal Bay with an access tag. Use these before you pay anyone — including us.
• Green waste, if you can keep it separate. The gate is roughly half price or better for clean green waste at every facility we verified: $152/tonne vs $407 at Whitehorse, $131/tonne vs $264.60 at Brisbane centres, $295/tonne vs $505 at Kimbriki — and Kimbriki takes the first 300kg of a resident's vegetation free each day.
• The facility is close and the trailer is yours. Kill the hire cost and most of the fuel cost and the tip run's only real costs are the gate fee and your time.
• Single bulky items. A mattress costs $36.60 to $60 to tip at the verified facilities above — cheaper than any bin, and some kerbside clean-ups take them free. See council clean-up vs skip bin.

When the skip wins

• The load is more than a couple of trailer trips. The worked example above is the general shape: per-visit minimums and per-tonne gate fees compound with every trip, while the skip is one price.
• You don't own a ute or trailer. Hire plus fuel plus gate fees rarely beats one delivered bin.
• You want to load over days, not in one push. A skip sits on your driveway for the hire period; a trailer wants to be returned.
• Your time is worth something. Six round trips with loading and queuing at the weighbridge is most of a weekend. The skip price includes someone else doing all of it.

What a skip actually costs, so you can run your own numbers

What is NOT allowed, whichever way you go

Neither a skip bin nor a standard tip face takes these — they need licensed disposal, and turning up with them wastes the trip:

• Asbestos, fibro and fibreglass
• Chemicals, liquids, oils, fuels, paints and solvents
• Gas bottles and aerosols
• Batteries
• Clinical or medical waste
