How long does it take to get a skip bin permit in Australia?
Between "immediately" and eight weeks, depending entirely on the council. Of 100 Australian councils audited on 2026-08-29, 66 publish a processing time or a required notice period and 34 publish none at all. Manningham City Council (VIC) issues the permit on the spot — "Temporary permits are issued immediately via email, once the online application and payment are completed." Toowoomba Regional Council (QLD) states "Applications generally take up to 8 weeks to be processed" and asks for applications twelve weeks ahead.
Every answer currently ranking for this question in Australia is a hedge — "48 hours", "at least 5 working days", "check with your local council". Below is what each council actually publishes, in its own words.
The published lead times
64 councils. Four councils publish a lead time that is not for a resident placing a skip bin — the City of Melbourne (out-of-hours placement only), Melton City Council (which says approval is emailed immediately and publishes no processing time), Blacktown City Council (whose 10 business days is for a skip bin company's registration) and Townsville City Council (a Road Work Permit involving a works zone, scaffolding or gantry). Blacktown, Melbourne and Melton appear in the table below with that qualification stated in the row; Townsville is excluded, along with the other three councils whose published material we could not use. That leaves 61 councils publishing a lead time that applies to a resident placing a bin.

The second question nobody answers: how long can the bin stay?
This is the more expensive question, and it is the one councils are quietest about. Of the same 100 councils:
- 35 publish an actual maximum placement period.
- Several refer to a maximum without stating one — Maroondah City Council ("Bins must not be on site for longer than the period specified on the permit"), Whitehorse City Council ("This permit is valid only for the stated time period") and the City of Gosnells (the verge permit runs for the period on the related building or demolition permit).
- 62 publish nothing at all. They do not tell you anywhere on their own website or fee schedule when the bin has to be gone.
Where a maximum is published it runs from three days (City of Onkaparinga) to twelve months (Campbelltown City Council, SA) — and the longest figures generally attach to a broader works or operational approval rather than to a domestic skip. Two councils publish the limit only as a question on the application form. Every row below is what that council actually publishes:

Two of those rows deserve reading twice. The City of Onkaparinga (SA) allows a maximum of 3 days, and Sutherland Shire Council (NSW) allows a different maximum depending on where the bin sits — "Bins can be placed for a maximum of 14 days on the nature strip/footpath, or 7 days on a roadway." Moving a bin two metres changes the rule.
And one council contradicts itself outright. The City of Canterbury Bankstown's adopted Waste in Public Places Local Approvals Policy states "Maximum duration of the approval is for a period of seven (7) days", while Council's own current application form states "Waste Containers 14 days maximum placement". Both are current Council documents; we publish both rather than pick one. See Where councils contradict themselves.
What to do with this
If the bin is going on your own property, none of this applies — no application, no lead time, no maximum. If it is going on a road, footpath or nature strip, the safe planning assumption is not a national average: it is your own council's published figure, and if your council has not published one — which is the majority case for how long the bin may stay — that is worth a phone call before you lock in a delivery date.
Method. 100 Australian councils — VIC 27, NSW 22, SA 19, WA 11, QLD 10, TAS 6, NT 4, ACT 1 — audited on 2026-08-29. Every figure is copied from the council's own permit page, application form or adopted fee schedule and machine-verified as a substring of that source; no time was estimated or carried across from another council. Councils publishing nothing are recorded as publishing nothing rather than assigned a default. "Lead time" mixes two different things as councils publish them — how long the council takes to assess, and how much notice the council requires — and each row says which, in the council's words. A maximum placement period is counted as published only where the source states an actual period; a sentence that refers to "the period on the permit" without naming one is counted separately. Four councils (Penrith, Alice Springs, Townsville, Devonport) are excluded from the tables because their published material is missing, internally contradictory, or about a different approval. This is a sample of 100 councils, not every Australian local government area.
