Why is my skip bin quote different from the price guide?

Because the same bin costs up to 385% more in one part of a state than another. In Victoria on 2026-08-30, a 2 m³ general-waste skip ran from $177 AUD in postcode 3043 (Gladstone Park) to $858 AUD in postcode 3939 (Rosebud) — a $681 difference for an identical bin, in the same state, on the same day. In New South Wales the same bin ran from $271 in 2527 (Albion Park) to $647 in 2577 (Moss Vale).

A national "average price" cannot survive that, and a price guide that gives you one is not lying so much as answering a different question than the one you asked.

Western Australia — 34 postcodes

Western Australia is the interesting one. At 2 m³, 8 m³ and 12 m³ every priced postcode in the sample carries the identical figure — no spread at all — while at 3 m³ and 4 m³ the price moves. That is not a market; that is a supplier's zone map.

The price does not drift across the map. It steps.

This is the part that actually explains your quote. The 305 postcodes in this sample collapse into just 113 distinct price ladders, and 56 of those ladders belong to a single postcode. Postcodes that share a supplier zone share an identical ladder, to the dollar:

So a quote for one suburb can read exactly the same as a quote for a suburb 20 km away, and then jump by hundreds of dollars for the suburb next door. Prices step at zone boundaries; they do not slope with distance. That is why:

• an average for "Sydney" or "Melbourne" tells you very little about your own street;
• a quote can differ sharply from a guide without either being wrong;
• and asking for a price by postcode is the only question with a single answer.

What actually moves the number

Four things, all of which the guides describe and none of which they quantify: which supplier zone your postcode falls in, which size you pick (see Is a bigger skip bin cheaper per cubic metre?), whether the waste is general household or heavy, and whether the bin needs to go on public land, which brings a council permit fee that is nothing at all in some council areas and hundreds of dollars in others (see What does a skip bin permit cost in my council?).

Method. 305 Australian postcodes with a live price ladder, quoted from the Local Skip Bin Hire booking engine on 2026-08-30 for weekday delivery in the week beginning 2026-09-07 (rungs were probed for Monday 2026-09-07 and Tuesday 2026-09-08; weekend delivery is priced higher and is excluded), general household waste, lowest available supplier price per size per postcode. Prices the engine could not source from the live supplier network were excluded rather than substituted from a catalogue. Spread is the dearest minus the cheapest within one state at one size, and the percentage is that difference over the cheapest. The postcode count differs by size because not every postcode is served in every size; each row states its own denominator. Suburb names are the suburb the postcode is published under on this site. Sample composition: NSW 107, VIC 96, QLD 65, WA 34, SA 3 postcodes; no Tasmanian, Northern Territory or ACT postcodes are in this sample, and South Australia has too few postcodes here to publish a spread. A "price ladder" is counted as distinct when any price at any size differs. Heavy waste is priced separately and excluded. Hire length is not a dimension of this dataset. This is a snapshot as at 2026-08-30 and makes no claim about how prices have moved over time.
